Pediatric Disorders of Regulation in Affect and Behavior: A Therapist's Guide to Assessment and Treatment

Review by Jennifer Coleman, Ph.D., Child Clinical Psychologist

Resource:  DeGangi, Georgia.  (2000).  Pediatric Disorders of Regulation in Affect and Behavior:  A Therapist's Guide to Assessment and Treatment.  Academic Press.  www.academicpress.com

This is an excellent resource for teachers, parents, and practitioners who work with young children.  It is a rare resource in that it focuses on problems in infancy and early childhood.  Dr. DeGangi offers a rich description of the regulatory, emotional, developmental, and sensory issues that interfere with childhood development.  Dr. DeGangi shows how to assess the individual child and the child's interaction with his or her environment.  Then, she describes her approach to systemic intervention.  Her approach is consistent with a transdisciplinary approach to assessment and intervention.  If you have children with mood regulation problems, sleep problems, feeding problems, attentional problems, and/or sensory integration problems, this is a must read!  I encourage you to check this book out from our lending library or order it from Academic Press.
