Easing Transitions with Object and Picture Schedules for Children with ADHD |
Young children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have an especially difficult time functioning in a noisy preschool or kindergarten classroom setting. There are some small changes teachers can make in the classroom environment to maximize a child’s potential to learn.
Seat the child close to you.
During circle time, seat the child on his or her own small square with plenty of personal space. Consider having one teacher sit behind the child during circle time to provide cues and redirection when needed.
Provide a structured classroom with set routines and clear expectations. Use visual schedules and visual cues with the child to help keep the child on track.
When working on art projects, make sure the child has plenty of space and there are few distracting items on the table.
Do not sit the child near other children who are overactive, restless, impulsive, or physical. This means having assigned seating with nametags, but you can still alternate the seating once or twice throughout the year.
