The Autism Society of America

The Autism Society of America’s website (www.autism-society.org) is a wonderful resource for parents and professionals who interact with children with autism.  The Autism Society of America was founded in 1965 by a small group of parents working on a volunteer basis out of their homes.  Today it has expanded to about 20,000 members and is dedicated to promoting public awareness about autism, providing information and education, supporting research, and advocating for programs and services for the autism population.

The website provides clearly written explanations about the causes, diagnosis, characteristics, and treatments for individuals with autism. In addition, the site outlines educational options for children and how parents can act as their child’s primary advocate.  In the “What’s New” section, web surfers can find interesting recent articles regarding autism in the news.  There is also a state-by-state resource map that provides detailed contact information for professionals to serve your child in your hometown.  This site was given rave reviews by several organizations including a four star rating by The ABC’s of Parenting and a Health Links Select Site.
