Community recreation for children with developmental disabilities, outcome measures of community participation, leadership training, and cultural diversity |
PERSONAL STATEMENT |
After several years of general practice, I joined the Peace Corps in 1984 and was assigned to the Children’s Hospital in Rabat, Morocco. This experience was the catalyst for my pursuit of a Master’s and Doctoral Degree in Public Health, Maternal and Child Health (PH/MCH) from the University of North Carolina. My interest in community health, combined with my skills as a pediatric physical therapist, spawned my research in the use of alternative environments to promote optimal outcomes for children with developmental disabilities. My current research has been supported through grants from the Gatorade, K.B. Reynolds Foundation, The NC Division of Women's and Children’s Health, and The Cape Fear Foundation. As the CDL Training Director, I coordinate courses at the CDL and on-line through my appointment in the Division of Physical Therapy. I speak at various training conferences on topics ranging from leadership development to health and wellness. I am involved with leadership initiatives through several local and statewide Advisory Boards, including the NC Office on Disability and Health.
