RESEARCH AND CLINICAL INTERESTS |
| Family-oriented approaches to the evaluation and management of developmental and behavioral problems in children and adolescents, neurodevelopmental assessment of learning differences, children’s mental health issues. |
PERSONAL STATEMENT |
Dr. Coleman is a Professor of Pediatrics at UNC and Assistant Consulting Professor of Pediatrics at Duke. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center where he was awarded the Golden Apple as the outstanding teaching resident among all residents in all departments in the medical center. He completed a two year fellowship in Ambulatory Pediatrics (general and behavioral-developmental pediatrics) with Dr. Mel Levine at Children’s Hospital in Boston, served a year on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He and Dr. Levine then joined the Department of Pediatrics and the Center for Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. He was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award.
He has served as Chair of the Section for Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), as a member of the Executive Council of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, and is presently the Chair of AAP Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health.
He has written numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of psychosocial-developmental-behavioral topics. He is co-author of Que Paso? An English-Spanish Guide for Medical Personnel, and author of Family Focused Behavioral Pediatrics (2001). He is co-editor of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics IV (2008).
Dr. Coleman was a contributing member for the panel “Behavior: Ask the Experts” of “Contemporary Pediatrics,” and was on the Editorial Board of “AAP News.”
His particular interest is developing a family-oriented, primary care approach to the assessment and management of behavioral-psychosocial problems, a method that utilizes solution-oriented and family systems principles and techniques. Dr. Coleman lectures at national and international meetings. |
