Wheeler, Yerby, and Olley Embark on New Grant for Prader-Willi Syndrome Research

The purpose of this project is to develop a rating scale linked to the educational needs of students with Prader-Willi Syndrome. This scale would be used to help create individualized profiles of these students to determine the appropriate learning strategies for them. The pilot version of this study includes having parents and teachers of 100 children nationwide complete specialized forms. Fifty children will come to the CDL to receive a neurodevelopmental assessment for construct validity. The pilot scale that will be used for these assessments is loosely based on an "All Kinds of Minds" prototype and Dr. Levine's model of neurodevelopmental constructs. The grant is funded for one year with the option to renew. Wheeler hopes that the initial findings will allow for further development of the scale and the opportunity to start to implement learning strategy protocols for the students.

Recruitment for participation in both parts of this study is ongoing. If you would like to know more about the study, please contact Dr. Wheeler for details (919-966-3566 or anne.wheeler@cdl.unc.edu).
